Ballin' and Shot Callin'

All three girls still play basketball. They all have their own "style" and I love watching them play.  Libby is getting really, really good.  She'll be a freshman next year and may have a chance to play some on the varsity team.  Madi and Carlie both scored at least one basket this season and Libby averages about 9 points a game.

Here are some pictures from the season.

First Kiss

When my girls were little we’d rub noses. I told them those were called Eskimo Kisses. But they thought I said Elmo Kisses. So that’s what we’ve always called them.

Last week we were at a basketball game. I was on the edge of the court taking pictures, my husband was coaching. My kids are classic gym rats running around all over the place.

I noticed that Carlie, our youngest at age 7…the one who’s a brainiac, has been missing for a while. So irritated, I go looking for her. I finally found her behind the bleachers with a little boy. I growled at her “WHAT do you think you’re doing back here!!!!” She calmly turned around and introduced me to her “boyfriend” Colter. Colter is quite a bit bigger than Carlie…so I narrow my eyes and ask him “How old are you?” He goes “Well I’m in first grade, and Carlie is in second, but it’s okay because we’re BOTH SEVEN.” Well….THAT’s a big relief.

So I ask them what they were doing back there. And the little boy says “Well, she’s my girlfriend, so I was kissing her!” He was quite proud about it. I blew a gasket. “You were KISSING HER….you’re both too young for that!!!” My daughter rolls her eyes at me and says “Geeze Mom, it was only Elmo kisses….so it was platonic!!!!”

I can’t even imagine what 15 is going to look like!!!

Sometimes the best Offense....

is a good defense. Madi is a very good defensive player. They always give her the biggest girl to guard. During her game on Saturday she was guarding a really tall girl. Madi was all over her, and they couldn't throw the ball to the girl at all.

Finally the girl said "Would you quit being so hard on me so that I can get the ball sometimes!!!" I asked Madi what she said to her and she goes "Nothing. I just kept guarding her!"

Carlie's First Basketball Game

This was the first year that they have allowed Kindergarteners to play. At first, I wasn't even going to let Carlie play. She tends to be more intellectual than athletic. In fact, right before basketball season started, I had gotten a note from her PE teacher because she was laying down in PE and refusing to run laps with the other kids.

But she SAW and read the flyer and came running to me waving it. I tried to talk her out of it, but she insisted that she wanted to play. I go "You DO know that there is RUNNING involved in Basketball, right?" But she told me "Tough girls play basketball, and I want to play!!!" So we signed her up.

Because none of the knew how to play, the league decided that the Kindergarteners would only play the last three games of the season. Carlie just could NOT understand why our other three kids got to play games every Saturday, but she didn't.

When we finally got to her first game it was well worth the wait. It was a actually a scrimmage. So she was playing against her other teammates. Carlie was one of the most aggressive kids out there. She was tackling other kids and jerking the ball away from them!! Her boyfriend, the one she's going to marry (pictured above) was on the other team. He had the ball and was running down the sidelines with it (out of bounds) and Carlie was hot on his heels screaming like a banshee. She was yelling "Kory!!! KORY!!! Come back here KORY!!!" Granny asked her afterwards why she was yelling at him like that and Carlie said "Well, I wanted him to give me the ball!!!!" We laughed and laughed and she had so much fun!!! She won all three of her games, the only one of our kids with an undefeated season!!!

Come and Make Me

Wow. The first three weeks of January were WONDERFUL for Frank. Then, that fourth week, his behavior took a nose dive. He was in trouble all week at school, culminating in him getting into a fight with a little girl for staring at him. He elbowed her, called her names and threw a rock at her (hitting her).

We finally figured out that he was up at night messing around instead of sleeping him. I grounded him to the upstairs bedroom so that I could keep an eye on him. He slept ALL weekend. I also made him sleep there Monday and Tuesday and he once again was good at school.

Then Wednesday night, he had a meltdown with his (male) basketball coach. It's very unusual for him to act up with a man. But they were working on a drill and Frank couldn't get it right. So he got frustrated and sat on the bench and refused to participate. The coach told him "Get your rear back out on the floor." And Frank responded "Come and make me, B!tch!!!"

Bob, being a High School Coach, about had a conniption fit. But Frank apologized to his coach today and his team members. And he did get to play a little in the game. That's the only problem we've had this week.

No Contact Week

This is the week in high school athletics between football and basketball where no atheletes may be contacted. So I am soaking it up. Bob has been home every evening, and I haven't cooked a meal or given a bath one time this week!! Woo Hooo!!!

I just finished the second book of the Twilight series. I can't seem to put them down. Better get them finished before Basketball Season starts!

Late and Lost

Well we finished up the basketball games today at Douglas. Libby had one game and Frank had two. The schedule said Libby's game was at Noon. Frank's started at 9am. The phone rings at 7:50am and the Coach wants to know if we remembered that her game had been moved to 8am!!! Ummm....the answer to that would be "NO!" We got her there at half time, so she got to play the last half of the game.

Frank played both of his games. When we got ready to leave, Carlie was missing!!! We looked outside the doors we'd come in, looked in the bathroom and couldn't find her. Finally after enlisting other parents to help we found her outside of one of the other doors. That kid can disappear faster than a snowall in July!!! She'll be five in two weeks!!

JB got a job at the Turnpike McDonalds for $7 something an hour. He starts on Tuesday.

Our busy season winds down

So now wrestling is over. We are so proud that J.B. got to go to the state tournament last weekend. As he walked off the mat for the last time on Friday, my only thought was "That's the last time I'll get to watch him wrestle." He is done with athletics and a chapter of his life has closed. Soon a new one will begin as he graduates from high school in a few short months. He's been with us almost exactly six months now, and he's come a long, long way.

We have one more set of basketball games for Frank and Libby and we are done for the season. She woke up on Saturday not feeling so well. I called her Coach to ask if they'd have enough girls to play without her. She said she'd only have 5 or6 there, so we dragged ourselves out of bed and drove to Douglas for the game. She went to sleep in the car on the way over there, but she played hard once she got there. She made a great basket during the game. You could hear the "Swoosh" as it went in....nothin' but net. But she admitted on the phone to her Granny later that night that she'd intended to pass the ball to someone, and it just accidentally went into the basket!

After we finished her game, we got in the car and drove to Frank's game at Benton. We made it with 10 minutes to spare. I was in line at the concession stand buying hotdogs for the little girls. I turned around to give Libby her hotdog and noticed she was gone. Madi came out of the girls' bathroom and told me "Mom!!! Libby's in the bathroom throwing up!!!" Poor thing, I hadn't realized she was that sick.

I then had to round up the two little girls who'd just started eating their hotdogs, and take the girls all home. I didn't get to watch any of Frank's game. The little girls were mad they had to go home. They'd just gotten settled in to eat their hotdogs and play with their friends.

Sunday I snuck off from the kids and spent the day with my Mom and Dad painting their living room. We had a great day, its been a long time since I've spent any time with them without 287 kids crawling over us. My husband told me that I would not be able to get away without the kids knowing where I was going. But I simply told them that I had work to do. That satisfied them all except Libby, whom I think was a bit suspicious. She also noticed the paint on my knee later that night after I came home. I played dumb.
